The long range forecast from Weather Workshop for all of New Zealand to midnight Friday.
Situation: A large anticyclone over New Zealand is expected to drift slowly east during the next few days. A shallow trough of low pressure should gradually spread in from the west during Wednesday and Thursday as the high moves away. From Friday a northwest flow should become established over the country ahead of a more active trough near southeast Australia.
NORTHLAND, AUCKLAND, COROMANDEL PENINSULA, BAY of PLENTY/ROTORUA, WAIKATO, WAITOMO, TAUMARANUI, TARANAKI, TAIHAPE, TAUPO, WANGANUI, MANAWATU and WELLINGTON: Fine in most places today and tomorrow but cloudy periods likely from Coromandel Peninsula to eastern Northland with the odd light shower at times. During Wednesday more extensive cloudiness likely. Drizzle patches developing about western districts by evening and light showers becoming more widespread about Northland and Auckland. From Bay of Plenty to Taupo remaining mostly fine. Thursday sees cloudy weather generally with drizzly rain in most areas. On Friday mainly fine conditions expected.
GISBORNE, HAWKES BAY and WAIRARAPA: Cloud clearing from Gisborne and northern Hawkes Bay today otherwise fine. Fine again tomorrow and Wednesday. Dry with high cloud Thursday then some brief rain in the small hours of Friday. A clearance then follows from the west.
NELSON: Fine up until Wednesday. Cloud increasing Thursday with late patchy rain. Clearing early Friday.
BULLER, WESTLAND and FIORDLAND: Cloudy and fine periods today. Tomorrow cloud more extensive with drizzle developing south of the glaciers. Rain in most places Wednesday and at first Thursday then easing to showers with a few fine periods likely. Friday rain setting in again over Fiordland with drizzle areas further north.
MARLBOROUGH and CANTERBURY: Mainly fine today until Wednesday. High cloud developing late on Wednesday however. On Thursday, rain about the alps with falls spreading further east at times. Becoming fine early Friday.
OTAGO and SOUTHLAND: Fine today and in most places tomorrow. Cloud increasing Wednesday then rain spreading from the west. Early Thursday showers persisting about the south coast and Stewart Island, elsewhere fine periods increasing. Rain developing about the western ranges Friday but further east remaining dry.
CHATHAM ISLANDS: The odd light shower clearing today and mostly fine tomorrow. A mix of cloud and fine periods Wednesday and Thursday. Patchy rain Friday.
