The long range forecast from Weather Workshop for all of New Zealand to midnight Wednesday:
Situation: An active frontal system is approaching the country from the Tasman Sea. This trough should gradually cross the country tomorrow and Monday and is followed by a southwest flow. On Tuesday a high in the Tasman Sea starts to push a ridge onto the South Island. On Wednesday the ridge covers much of the country with a weakening southeast flow over the North Island and westerlies to the lower South Island.
NORTHLAND, AUCKLAND, COROMANDEL PENINSULA,
WAIKATO, WAITOMO, TAUMARANUI, TARANAKI, TAIHAPE, WANGANUI
and MANAWATU: Cloud increasing today with drizzle patches
developing towards evening. Showers turning to rain from
tomorrow afternoon with northwesterlies. Rain easing to
showers Monday, winds turning
southwest. Showers
clearing on Tuesday and becoming mostly fine on
Wednesday.
BAY of PLENTY/ROTORUA and TAUPO: Fine today. Fine at first tomorrow then late rain spreading from the west. Rain easing to a few showers early Monday then fine Tuesday and Wednesday.
WELLINGTON: Mainly fine today but cloud increasing late later. Drizzle developing tomorrow then turning to rain later with strong northerlies. Further rain on Monday with a cold southerly change. A few showers clearing on Tuesday with southerly winds. Mainly fine on Wednesday.
GISBORNE, HAWKES BAY and WAIRARAPA: Fine today. High cloud developing tomorrow with late rain spreading from the ranges. Further rain on Monday with cool southerlies working northward. Further showers on Tuesday then showers becoming confined to Gisborne on Wednesday.
NELSON: Mainly fine today. Showers developing about the western ranges tonight. Rain developing tomorrow. Rain easing to showers on Monday then clearing. Mostly fine on Tuesday and Wednesday.
BULLER, WESTLAND and FIORDLAND: Showers turning to rain with heavy falls developing about Fiordland. Tomorrow sees main rain areas becoming confined to northern Westland and Buller with showers and fine spells further south. Skies clearing Monday. Mostly fine on Tuesday and Wednesday.
MARLBOROUGH, CANTERBURY and OTAGO: Fine today but high cloud increasing later. Tomorrow, rain spreading from the west for a time then showers and cold southerlies spread north well after dark. Coastal showers Monday and fine breaks inland. Mainly fine on Tuesday.
SOUTHLAND: High cloud thickening with rain developing about the western ranges. Rain easing tomorrow then showers and cold southerlies developing later with snow to the ranges. showers likely again Monday then retreating to the coast on Tuesday and becoming fine inland. Fine to most places on Wednesday.
CHATHAM ISLANDS: Showery today and tomorrow. Rain and strong northwesterlies on Monday then easing to showers and cold southwesterlies on Tuesday. Further showers on Wednesday with southwesterlies easing.
