The long range forecast from Weather Workshop for all of New Zealand to midnight Monday:
Situation: An anticyclone should move off the upper North Island tomorrow as a northwest flow strengthens over the country ahead of an active trough from the Tasman Sea. The trough is expected to cross most areas Saturday and is followed by a cold, disturbed southwest airstream.
NORTHLAND, AUCKLAND, COROMANDEL PENINSULA, BAY of PLENTY/ROTORUA, WAIKATO, WAITOMO, TAUMARANUI, TARANAKI, TAUPO, TAIHAPE, WANGANUI and MANAWATU: Cloud increasing in the north and west with drizzle from Taranaki south this evening, elsewhere remaining dry. Tomorrow patchy rain in many areas but probably staying dry from Bay of Plenty to Taupo. Rain, widespread for a time Saturday then a change to colder southwesterlies at night with snow likely about the volcanic plateau and main ranges. During Sunday and Monday a mix of fine and cloudy conditions with a few showers likely also.
GISBORNE, HAWKES BAY and WAIRARAPA: Fine today. Northwesterlies strengthening south of Napier. Tomorrow cloudy, dry and windy. Rain and cold southerlies spreading north during Saturday. Showers becoming confined to Gisborne on Sunday then mainly fine Monday.
WELLINGTON: Cloud increasing tonight with a few drizzle patches. Strong gusty northerlies tomorrow with patchy rain. More persistent rain likely early Saturday then easing to a few showers as colder southerlies develop. Further showers Saturday then mainly fine Monday with northerlies returning.
NELSON: High cloud thickening today with rain developing about the western ranges tonight. Tomorrow rain spreading to most places. Colder southerlies developing early Saturday with rain clearing. Mainly fine and frosty from early Sunday onwards.
MARLBOROUGH and CANTERBURY: High cloud thickening today with rain developing about the western ranges. Northwest gales later from inland Canterbury southwards. Tomorrow a few falls of rain spreading from the west in strong northwest conditions and snow likely to the southern Alps. A southwest change Saturday morning with brief rain then a few coastal showers and becoming fine inland. A few coastal showers likely Sunday and Monday, elsewhere mainly fine with inland frosts.
BULLER, WESTLAND and FIORDLAND: Rain working into most areas today with heavy falls south of Hokitika from tonight. Later tomorrow rain gradually easing to showers from the south. Becoming fine Saturday in most places but cloud increasing later about the fiords. Showers and fine periods Sunday with southwest winds. Few showers expected Monday.
OTAGO and SOUTHLAND: High cloud thickening with rain developing about the western ranges. Northwest gales later today about inland areas. Tomorrow some rain in most places briefly with snow on the higher range tops. West to northwest winds easing then a southwest change working slowly north with showers. Becoming mainly fine Saturday. Wintry showers and strong southwesterlies Sunday, showers retreating to the south coast Monday and winds easing.
CHATHAM ISLANDS: Cloudy with the odd shower today and tomorrow. Northwesterlies strengthening tomorrow. Showers turning to rain Saturday with strong northwest winds continuing. Rain easing to showers Sunday and turning colder with southwesterlies developing. Cold and showery again Monday.
