Weather Workshop: 5 day forecast for NZ

The long range forecast from Weather Workshop for all of New Zealand to midnight Tuesday:

Situation: An active frontal zone over the lower South Island is moving slowly northeast and should move off the upper North Island later tomorrow. The front is preceded by a very strong northwest flow and followed by a weak ridge. During Sunday a cold front should sweep the country and is followed by a cold disturbed southwest flow. This flow is likely to persist into Tuesday.

NORTHLAND, AUCKLAND, COROMANDEL PENINSULA, BAY of PLENTY/ROTORUA, WAIKATO, WAITOMO, TAUMARANUI, TARANAKI, TAUPO, TAIHAPE, WANGANUI and MANAWATU: Rain in most places today but falls not reaching areas north of Hamilton until evening. Northwest winds to gale about Wellington and strong and gusty in many other places for a time. Tomorrow rain gradually clearing from the south with fine
periods increasing. From Sunday to Tuesday a few showers in the north and west, long fine periods elsewhere with cooler southwesterlies.

GISBORNE, HAWKES BAY and WAIRARAPA: Cloud increasing with strengthening northwesterlies and rain about Wairarapa. Falls spreading elsewhere this evening and overnight then a gradual clearance working north tomorrow. A period of showers spreading from the south Sunday with a southwest change. Further showers Monday and Tuesday, chiefly coastal.

WELLINGTON: Rain becoming heavy for a time this afternoon and evening with northwesterlies to gale force. Winds easing overnight then becoming fine tomorrow. Showers and turning colder Sunday with a southwest change. Mainly fine Monday and Tuesday with northwest winds.

NELSON: A period of rain today then clearing overnight. Brief showers Sunday with southwest winds then mainly fine on remaining days.

MARLBOROUGH: Rain becoming widespread today with strong gusty northwesterlies. Early tomorrow rain clearing and winds turning to the south briefly. A squally southwest change Sunday with showers. Further showers, chiefly coastal Monday then mainly fine conditions Tuesday.

CANTERBURY and OTAGO: Rain about the western ranges with brief falls further east at times. Northwest gales in some exposed places easing during the day. Tomorrow mainly fine but a few coastal showers possible during the morning. Sunday sees a squally showery southwest change spreading north and turning colder with snow to the ranges. A few further showers about the coast Monday then mainly fine Tuesday but cold southwest continuing.

BULLER, WESTLAND and FIORDLAND: Widespread rain slowly clearing from the south today then fine at first tomorrow. Cloud then increasing with showers developing south of the glaciers. Showers reaching most places Sunday but fine spells also. From Tuesday onwards a mix of showers and fine periods in southwest conditions.

SOUTHLAND: Northwesterlies easing today with rain areas becoming confined to the coast. Tomorrow cloudy periods with coastal showers becoming widespread later. Colder from early Sunday with showery southwesterlies. Monday and Tuesday sees winds from the west or southwest along with showers and fine periods.

CHATHAM ISLANDS: Northwesterlies strengthening today and rain from tonight. Tomorrow rain persisting for much of the day then easing to showers at night with winds turning southwest. From Sunday onwards changeable showery conditions with cold southwesterlies.
