The long range forecast from Weather Workshop for all of New Zealand to midnight Saturday:
Situation: A front and associated southwest change is spreading over the country today. Tomorrow, the high pushes back onto the North Island and a westerly flow develops over the South Island. On Thursday another front crosses the country from the Tasman Sea. On Friday and Saturday the high dominates but a strong northwest flow extending from Australia should move onto the lower South Island.
NORTHLAND, AUCKLAND, WAIKATO, WAITOMO, TAUMARANUI, TARANAKI, TAIHAPE, WANGANUI and MANAWATU: A few showers today then becoming fine early tomorrow. Cloudy with a few showers and northwesterlies on Thursday then southwesterlies developing after dark. Becoming fine on Friday and remaining fine on Saturday.
COROMANDEL PENINSULA, BAY of PLENTY/ROTORUA and TAUPO: Fine at first but a few showers developing later today. Mainly fine tomorrow then showers spreading from the west late Thursday. Mostly fine on Friday and remaining fine on Saturday.
GISBORNE, HAWKES BAY and WAIRARAPA: Showers to most places today then becoming fine tomorrow. On Thursday, high cloud and northwesterlies at first. Showers and southerlies spread north after dark. Remaining showers clearing Friday and becoming fine. Fine on Saturday.
WELLINGTON: Showers clearing later today. Mostly fine tomorrow. Cloudy on Thursday then showers and southerlies developing later. Becoming fine on Friday remaining fine on Saturday.
NELSON: Showers clearing later today. Mainly fine tomorrow. Cloud increasing Thursday then showers and southwesterlies developing. Becoming fine on Friday. Mainly fine on Saturday, some high cloud developing later.
MARLBOROUGH and CANTERBURY: Showers becoming confined to the Kaikoura Coast today. Mainly fine tomorrow. High cloud on Thursday then showers and southwesterlies spread north. Becoming fine on Friday. Mostly fine Saturday but with increasing high cloud about Canterbury.
BULLER, WESTLAND and FIORDLAND: Showers clearing from the south today. Mainly fine tomorrow but cloud increasing later with patchy rain developing about Fiordland. Showers and southwesterlies spread north again on Thursday. Cloudy about the Fiords on Friday, mainly fine elsewhere. On Saturday, Rain south of the glaciers with cloudy skies elsewhere.
OTAGO and SOUTHLAND: A few showers about the coast but becoming fine inland. Cloudy at times with northwesterlies tomorrow. Showers and southwesterlies on Thursday. Further cloudy periods on Friday with northwest winds. Rain about the western ranges on Saturday with high cloud and gusty northwesterlies elsewhere.
CHATHAM ISLANDS: Showers and southwesterlies developing today with further showers tomorrow. Cloudy on Thursday with gusty northwesterlies. Showers and southwesterlies clearing on Friday and mainly fine on Saturday.
